The earthquake which rocked Samoa recently (and resulted in unfortunate deaths) generated a tsumani advisory in Hawaii. How does one prepare? What should you expect? What should you do after?

Earthquakes are horrible and difficult to predict. Tsunamis, on the other hand, usually the aftermath of an earthquake (or volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions) often take some time to develop and advance warnings are possible.

What is a tsunami?

  • A tsunami is a wave caused by sudden motion on the ocean floor (such as an earthquake).
  • Tsunami waves travel swiftly and build into large deadly waves in the shallow water of the shoreline.
  • It is not a single wave but a series or waves.
