Clint Eastwood's speech at the RNC earlier this week drew fire from both sides of the aisle in his hometown, Carmel, California. Despite Carmel's reputation as a Republican stronghold, a majority of the voters are actually Democratic, if you don't count Pebble Beach.
If you're planning a trip to Pebble Beach's famed golf courses, you can look up Eastwood at his historic hotel, the Carmel River Ranch, just blocks from the Carmel Mission State Park. Downtown, check out his original venue, the Hog's Breath Inn, for a rustic rendevous from the days of Play Misty for me.
Locals who remember the Bob Hope Classic at La Quinta in Southern California, and Hope's many visits to Pebble Beach, may be recalling some of Hope's great one-liners. It seems that Eastwood should have gotten a few pointers from America's greatest ad-libber.
Hope, a Republican, had a few one-liners about his good friend, President Gerald Ford, former governor of Michigan. Ford was notorious for beaning spectators with wayward golf shots. Over the years, Hope skewered his good friend, along with other White House residents. If you're at Pebble Beach, channel the ghost of Bob as your foursome tees up.

When celebrity pundits pushed politics further into the realm of spectacle, Hope's one-liners became a relic of a kinder, gentler era. In response, comedians created faux news shows. Today, the news media create faux news. Back in Pebble Beach, the golf clubs are still swinging. In 1970, Hope decried the trend in politics and the media as follows:

I stayed away from it until this past year, when I figured that it had to be pretty important. I got a very negative feeling that the country was getting very little support from the news media.
