Its rare for employees of American companies to have more than 2 weeks of vacation a year. This limitation seems to make it hard for singles with limited resources to go on vacation with their friends. Fierce travelers end up traveling by themselves.

Couchsurfing.com offers a solution on two levels to this type of travelers. Not only it offers a free place to sleep, but it also provides you with a local guide, and sometimes even a friend at your destination.

A couple years back, my friend cancelled at the last minute on a trip to Alaska during the high summer season. Because my budget was limited, I decided to keep the cheap ($30/day) car rental we found, but to risk not having accommodations. I contacted people through myspace.com, with which I only had a limited experience. I was counting on the stereotype that people attracted to Alaska would be risk takers and pioneers. Not only they might take the chance to offer me a bed, but they might have inspiring stories to share too. I traveled by myself with my pepper spray and reported daily on my location and meetings to my friend in Philadelphia. My experience was exhilarating, and I couldnt help but tell all people what a wonderful adventure I had just been on.

When I finally shared this with my parents whom I didnt want to worry, they pointed to an article in a French paper talking about the couch surfing project 2 (CS2) and told me to check it out. CS2 connects people all over the world, from Tokyo to Turkey. No need for pepper sprays because CS2 has a security system to encourage people to be responsible for their actions, at least financially. It is forbidden for members to charge for hosting, but it is always a nice gesture to bring a keepsake with you to thank the host for the couple of days he/she is helping you out. After all, its a social network and you want to be a good member!
