Nashville is full of gems that need to be rediscovered and one such gem is the Parthenon at Centennial Park. Before one can appreciate the splendor of Nashvilles Parthenon, one may first want to review the history of the original Parthenon found in Athens Greece.

Here are a few fast facts about the original structure:

-The Parthenon is a temple located on the Acropolis, a hill overlooking the city of Athens, Greece. The exact coordinates are 3758 17.45 N / 2343 34.29 E

-The Parthenon was designed by Phidias

-Work on the building began in 447 BCE and continued until 438 BCE

-The glory of the Parthenon was the gigantic statue of Athena designed by Phidias

The work of the art that stands like a shimmering jewel in the sun in the heart of the Centennial Park is the only exact replica of the Parthenon that exists in the world.

Contruction began in 1897 for the Tennessee Centennial and International exposition. It was originally a temporary structure, but the edifice gained popularity and notariaty and fit well with Nashvilles reputation as the Athens of the South. Subsuquently, the crumbling structure took on a permanent reface in 1920. It opened in 1931 to over 10,000 visitors from United States and around the globe.

Like the original Parthenon, the highlight at its center is an awe inspiring statue of the prudent Goddess of wisdom, Athena.

A word on Centennial Park:

  • The park was once a part of a 640 acre farm purchased in 1783 for fifty cents an acre by pioneers John and Ann Robertson Cockrill.
  • The land marks the Northern terminus of Natchez Trace.
  • The park was an assembly for two wars, the War of 1812 and the Civil War
  • It was also a race course and fairground

The Centennial Park is an amazing all day escape for families with children of all ages with its festival and fairs. It has beautiful walking trails and a duck pond. It is scattered with art and history and is a must see for Nashville residents and visitors alike.

The Pinnacle of the park, however, is hands down the Parthenon. In addition to its rich history and the grand Athena statue the Parthenon boasts art galleries full of works both new and old.

Take a quick trip to Greecewithout leaving Nashville at the Parthenon at Centennial Park. "The essential to budget travel is to plan in front. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our heads. Arranging and expending our travel budget correctly is a consideration for most families. Lowering consuming and expenses, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed success and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind saving money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal funds is really tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, regardless of whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel charge!..". It could be a family summer mini vacation for under $50.
