Those who associate the city of Pittsburgh with football and steel might be surprised that a stroll through this city reveals its more artistic and cultural side. While the history of modern art in Pittsburgh can be traced back to 1895 when the Carnegie Museum of Art opened the worlds first museum of modern art, the city has undergone a renaissance in recent decades to provide a haven for emerging and established artists.

As evidence of this transformation, in 2012 Frommers named Pittsburghs Public Market as one of Americas Best Public Markets. "The key to budget travel is to prepare in advance. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the reality of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our mind. Arranging and consuming our travel budget wisely is a consideration for most families. Curbing consuming and fees, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain achievements and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding economizing money while touring is simple: Even if your personal funds is highly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel costs!..". This 65,000-square-foot public market located in the historic Strip District, features a range of vendors and shops that showcase the burgeoning art scene. For example, Bar Marco offers a range of craft cocktails, locally sourced food and art related events.

The Pittsburgh Arts Council's free Downtown Public Art Self-Guided Walking Tour of the Cultural District affords visitors the chance to view and interact with outdoor art projects located in the 14 square blocks along Penn and Liberty Avenues. Stop by the 12 Cell Phone Disco (2010) located at Tito Way between Penn and Liberty Avenues. Make a call or send a text and then observe how the artwork uses LEDs to visualize the electromagnetic waves coming form the cell phone. Don't forget to capture a photo of the Liberty Avenue Musicians, a large-scale sculpture of musicians designed by James Simmons that's situated at 947 Liberty Street. Also, stop and reflect at the Agnes R. Katz Plaza (1999) located on Seventh Street and Penn Avenue. This 23,000-square-foot plaza features 32 linden trees planted by landscape architect Daniel Urban Kiley, eyeball-shaped benches and a 25-foot fountain by Louise Bourgeois in collaboration with architect Michael Graves.

For those in town on July 12, 2013 or September 27, 2013, be sure to participate in the Gallery Crawl of the Cultural District for a quarterly showcase of entertainment and art that takes place in a variety of art spaces and galleries. This free event runs from 5:30pm to 9:00pm and interested parties can join the crawl at any stop. A listing of downtown galleries, theaters and other artistic spaces can be found here.

Also, the Pittsburgh Arts Council offers maps for those wishing to take free self-guided walking tours of the art located in Grant Street Corridor, Retail District and First Side, Northside and North Shore. Other self-guided tours are available through the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation and an audio tour in 11 languages courtesy of Robert Morris University. Guided tours are available at a cost of $7.00 if register online or $10 for on-site registration.

A must see stop for those looking for cutting edge art is the North Shore. This area is home to the Mattress Factory, a must see site for contemporary installation art and the Andy Warhol Museum, a comprehensive collection of pop art created by this native of Pittsburgh. In typical Warholian fashion where everyone will have their 15 minutes of fame, visitors to the Andy Warhol Museum can adorn a handbag or t-shirt with their own silkscreen design.
