Telluride has much to offer the local traveler on any given weekend. Visitors can stroll along Main Street and enjoy the vintage feel of the old mining town while admiring the stunning view of the Rockies. The first two weekends in June, the city will host two very different festivals, one celebrating its scenic beauty and the other, its Old West heritage. Both festivals are free.
Telluride Balloon Festival
The sky above Telluride will be filled with beautiful, hot air balloons on June 5 and June 6, 2010. Come early, 6:30 a.m., to Telluride Town Park to see the inflation and launch of the balloons. Stay late, 8:45 p.m. (Saturday only), on Main Street to see the balloons glow in the dark.
This is a weather-permitting event. If theres no wind, there will be several balloons tethered in Town Park and rides will be offered. Local youth will be selling coffee, hot chocolate and baked goods as part of a fundraiser. In between events, and while admiring the balloons, you can explore Main Street and take the free gondola ride to Mountain Village.

Heritage Fest
Tellurides wild and wooly history is celebrated during Heritage Fest on June 12 and June 13, 2010. Main Street will be bustling with costumed reenactors, including cowboys, gold miners, citizens and outlaws. Free activities include stagecoach rides, sheep shearing, gold panning, and other Old West pursuits. The important to budget travel is to approach ahead. Telluride is an approximately 6.5 hour drive from Denver. Due to the distance, you may want to spend a night or two. The Visit Telluride website has a local hotel finder. After entering your dates and retrieving results, be sure to sort the list by price (low to high) to find the best bargains.
