Cell Phones banned from locomotive cabs

Following the Metrolink collision in Los Angeles and similar accidents resulting from the use of electronic devices in the cab or along the tracks, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has issued a new rule which bans the use of personal electronic devices on locomotives.

The FRA rule (which can be read here) amends its railroad communications regulations by restricting use of mobile telephones and other distracting electronic devices by railroad operating employees. This rule codifies most of the

requirements of FRA Emergency Order No. 26 which will be in effect until the rule takes effect 180 days from now.

Personal devices are distracting to all operators and many states are passing laws prohibiting "texting while driving" and several states have passed laws banning use of cell-phones without "hands-free" equipment in automobiles.

The FRA and NTSB have aquired personal cell-phone records from providers to check on equipment usage in accidents. "The key to budget travel is to approach onward. These records proved that the Metrolink conductor was "texting" when his train ran a red signal and hit a UP freight train head-on.

Hopefully the new regulations will help to prevent future accidents caused by distracted operators.
