In the mountains of Eastern Pennsylvania in the town of Ashland, and just a few blocks from Main Street high on a hill is an abandoned coal mine. When this mine was operational, coal was mined out of the mountain. It was loaded onto a mine train that took the coal to the outside. The mine train was the main source of transportation for the coal and the miners as it was a long trek into the mountain.
Today, miners are no longer mining coal nor is coal being hauled out, but you can take the same train that was used when the mine was in operation. The mine train now takes tourist into the mountain. As you ride along, you can feel the joints on the tracks. A tour guide will take you through the tunnel pointing out the different areas when coal was taken out. At the end of the line, you will be taken through the various tunnels where workers once carried coal through.
The Pioneer Tunnel is considered as one of the top ten attractions in the state of Pennsylvania. Along with the mine train, there is also a steam train that operates from the same location.
