Lonely Planet has extended a 30 % off sale on its guidebooks - and if you spend $40 or more, you get free shipping as well. What's the catch? In most cases, you're helping to clear out the warehouse of 2008 editions before the 2009 ones arrive.
Which makes this a great time and place to discuss the money-saving aspects of sticking with a guidebook that's two or three or more years out of date - in addition to the 9 months to a year or more it took between the time the writer turned off his or her computer and the print edition actually came out. What stays "good" in an out-of-date guidebook?
- Places usually stay the same. The names may change on that corner disco, but the chances it will still be a disco are very, very good. Ditto hotels, rooms, and lodgings of all types.
- Prices change, but usually not by much. Assume a 10% rise year-over-year, and you'll rarely be surprised. The exception is for hotels undergoing extensive renovations - but in most cases, you'll be calling, faxing, or emailing them beforehand anyway.
- Schedules change - but, generally, these are just as likely to have changed between the guidebook's last edit and when you find it in your hand, even if you have it on alert to buy as soon as it's off the presses. This is something you will still need to confirm, and any printed source, even the pamphlet proclaiming to be "official schedule of XYZ Ferries", should always be regarded with some healthy suspicion.
- Background information. The history of a place rarely changes substantially, but tastes in information do. A very old guidebook may actually have some interesting bits of trivia that have been left out of more streamlined editions.
- Remoteness. What was charming and isolated in a guidebook ten years ago probably isn't nearly as isolated now.
- Amenities. Usually, the endless march of progress will improve facilities.
- Fashion. The trendy vacation spot may have lost some of its glamour, or that unknown gem may now be hosting all-inclusive coach tours
