To the average pro-sports fan, the announcement that their teams pre-season practices will commence during scorching temperatures and feature a laundry-list of players-to-be-cut-later might not elicit much response. Not true for New England Patriots fanswho flock by the hordes to catch a glimpse of Coach Belichick and crew stretch their hammies in unison in the cruel August heat.
Fans arrive at the practice facilities (in the same complex as Gillette Stadium) hours early to stake out a good spot on the few metal bleachers around the practice fields, or on the grassy embankments alongside them. The key to budget travel is to approach onward. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the truth of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our minds. One of the most rewarding aspects of the practices for the bevy of enthusiastic fans, is their proximity to the players: the practice fields have the same feel as your average set of high school bleachers. Fans are right at the edge of the action, which affords a much better chance at getting the occasional autograph. Although this hope seems like a distant dream during the season, many of the players take this more relaxed time to show some fan appreciationjust bring your own Sharpie if you want to guarantee that Tedy Bruschi signs your sons forehead.
Pats training camp has come a long way since the days when it used to be conducted at Bryant College (now Bryant University) and fans were kept at bay by plywoodand would often bump into players walking over to the practice fields (or, if it was Lawyer Milloy, riding a little yellow scooter). Ever since their fated 2001 Superbowl run, training camp has been taken a little more seriously by players and fans alike; security is a bit tighter, and crowds are a little larger nowadays. Despite this, the trip to Gillette is rewarding for fans who want to see their favorite players up close, without breaking the bank on ludicrously expensive regular season tickets.
