As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, many people will take the time to think about what they can do to make the earth a better place to live. Whether you are a strong environmentalist or not even sure what Earth Day is about, there are things many people can do to help the earth and the environment today.

Plant a tree - Planting trees is a great way to help renew the earth's resources and provide oxygen and beauty to the world around us.

Pick up trash - Whether it's a piece of paper in the parking lot, the side of the road, or in your neighborhood, each of us can do our part to make things prettier and cleaner. Put trash in it's proper place and be mindful of the messes we can make.

Recycle and proper disposal - Whether it be a can, plastic bag, an old computer, or motor oil, recycle the materials that can be re-used or know how to dispose of items properly. An old computer can be donated to schools or e-waste dump containers where they can be recycled and properly disposed. Motor oil and certain chemicals should never be dumped in the trash but dropped off at an oil recycling center or cleaned out. Check with your local city to see what to do with these items and help keep rivers and streams clean.

Compost - Not sure what to do with your leaves, old fruits and vegetables, grass clippings, and newspapers? All of these can be used to make your own compost which will turn into a rich soil that can be used to grow things. Numerous towns and cities have guides for composting and there is information on the internet as well. It's clean and renewable and is a nutrient rich product for lawns, flowers, plants, and gardens.

Plant a garden - These days, gardening doesn't have to be as difficult as it used to be. Recently, I learned about Square Foot Gardening (which has become popular here in the Sacramento area). It's a way of taking limited space, making gardening easy, and growing your own fruits and vegetables. Not only is it organic but you take pride in what you grow and are more likely to consume your own produce while eating healthy at the same time.

Donate - Donate your time or money to organizations. It can be something as simple as picking up litter or as focused as saving rain forests and being active in the environmental community.

No matter how big or small, each of us can do our part to make this a better place to live.

Earth Day events

For those that want to take a more active part in Earth Day here in Sacramento, here are a few events going on today:

Earth Day at the Capitol - From 10 am to 2 pm, the south steps of the capitol will display students' art made from garbage collected from Sacramento County Creek Week. CalRecycle and Keep California Beautiful are the sponsors and will be on hand.

Earth Day at City Hall - City Hall and Cesar Chavez park will host an Earth Day event from 9 am to 2 pm. Mayor Kevin Johnson and the City Council will host the event which will include Radio Disney, a magic show, a theater performance, and even a Harlem Globetrotter.

Cash for Appliances - The California Energy Commission kicks off a campaign to give you rebates on the purchase of appliances, including $200 for energy-efficient refrigerators, $100 on washers, and $50 on air conditioners. For more details, check out www.cash4appliances.org/.

If you have time, there are more Earth Day events this weekend including Earth Day in Loomis, trash pick ups with the Sierra Club (call 530-889-9392 to register in Placer County), and tree planting at Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in Elk Grove (call 916-924-8733, ext. 122 to sign up).

Events in Sacramento this weekend

If you are looking for more things to do this weekend, there are a number of different activities including theater, jazz, comedy, MMA, Scottish games, and basketball in Sacramento and San Francisco. The important to budget travel is to prepare in front. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our thoughts. Preparation and spending our travel budget wisely is a consideration for most families. Reducing expending and prices, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed success and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind protecting money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal budget is highly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, whether on a funds or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel bill!. Also, you can get free entrance to National Parks. Whether you choose to celebrate in small ways or big ways, Earth Day is a reminder that there is always something we can do to make the world we live in a little nicer.
