The current advertising slogan says "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas." A more insightful slogan might be "Ridiculous Spectacle - bring walking shoes."
You've never been to Las Vegas? With cheap airfare and under-booked hotels, now might be a good time for your first trip. The key to budget travel is to prepare onward. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the reality of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our minds. Organizing and expending our travel budget carefully is a priority for most families. Reducing expending and charges, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain achievement and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding saving money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal finances is incredibly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!. Here is some advice:
- Lodging. Kayak.com allows you to choose a destination and date and see the hotels in order of popularity. Select one that is reasonably priced, and then go directly to that hotel's website to see if a better deal is available. Generally, the newer hotels on The Strip are the priciest (Wynn, Venetian, Mandalay). However, great deals can sometimes be found at the moderate Strip hotels (Ballys, Tropicana, Circus Circus), off-Strip properties (Rio, Gold Coast, Terribles), and downtown. First-timers usually stay on the Strip. Be aware that each hotel has its own demographic. Read the user comments! Very generally, more senior guests tend toward the properties at the North end of the Strip (Stratosphere, Sahara, Imperial Palace) and downtown (Golden Nugget, Plaza, Binions). The Southern end of the Strip tends to be more youthful (Luxor, Excalibur, Planet Hollywood).
- Transportation. Bring a comfortable pair of walking shoes. You might be able to see your destination from your hotel window, but that is not relevant. Modern casino hotel design dictates that it will be a long hike through the
gaming rooms to get to the front door, then a long hike from there to the sidewalk. First-timers should bring bread crumbs. That was actually suggested to me by a helpful staff member at the MGM Grand. The monorail looks slick and efficient, but don't be fooled. It is a long hike though gaming rooms to get to it one block East of the Strip, and it doesn't really shorten your walk much. Unless you're headed to the Stratosphere. What the monorail should do is serve the airport, but the taxi and shuttle lobbies are strongly opposed to the idea. What a surprise! As an alternative, the $2 Deuce Bus runs up and down the Strip regularly, and taxis abound.
- Sights. Most of the ridiculous spectacle is free. Every casino hotel has some worthwhile attraction. The musical fountains and the Japanese Tea Garden at the Bellagio, the faux cityscape and landmarks of New York, New York, the lion exhibit at MGM Grand, the confrontation between pirates and the Sirens of TI, The faux Eiffel Tower and the lovely faux ambiance of Paris are all there for you to peruse. The fabulous automobile museum at the Imperial Palace and the terrific views and thrill rides atop the Stratosphere are worth the nominal cost. From the Stratosphere you can observe how self-contained the city is, how it lies in the middle of a desert ringed with snow-capped mountains. A Hoover Dam tour can take as little as half a day and $35 at VegasTours.com, but watch out! That same dam tour is $75 from your hotel concierge.
- Entertainment. If someone recommends that you see something, see it! Recommendations I ignored include George Carlin, Danny Gans, and Siegfried and Roy, and now I'm sorry. Unless you are dying to see a specific show on a specific day, the best bet is Tix 4 Tonight, which offers same-day half-price tickets to most of the popular shows and attractions from several Strip locations. The best bang for my entertainment buck was the Legends in Concert. These were dead-on imitators of Jay Leno, Barry White, Dolly Parton, Madonna, The Temptations, and Elvis. They had the look, the voice, the mannerisms, the audience rapport, and it was fabulous. Added to this I found myself sitting next to a couple from Baltimore. After having an intense 5-minute discussion of hometown minutia we felt like best friends, and spent our whole time together laughing and enjoying the show. Even better - I chose this show at the last minute based on the recommendation of the Hoover Dam tour bus driver and found half-priced tickets.
IsLas Vegas for you? Even if you don't gamble, you might be surprised. A trip to Vegas might just help you rediscover the value of stepping outside your little world and experiencing something new. It could be the subject of a study in Economics, Sociology, Urban Planning, Societal Trends and Human Behavior. Personally, a trip to Vegas is an inexpensive reminder that there is a difference between "my" world and "the" world.
And, it's just plain fun.
