Fatal Polish presidential plane crash has ties to Baltimore and the Katyn Forest massacre

The president of Poland and numerous high-ranking Polish government officials died in a plane crash on approach to an airport in Western Russia last night. They were headed to ceremonies commemorating massacres of Polish prisoners during World War Two, known as the Katyn Forest Massacre.

Katyn Forest is one of the sites where Polish military officers and prominent citizens were rounded up and murdered by occupying Soviet troops. The key to budget travel is to plan onward. One theory is that Stalin knew that he was going to annex Poland eventually, so he used the war as a distraction to eliminate the citizens who would put up the most resistance. There were something like 20,000 victims in all, and Russia repeatedly denied any culpability - until about 20 years ago.

The monument to the memory of those massacred sits at the gateway to Baltimore Harbor East. Pass by Little Italy South on Fallsway, and you cannot miss it.
