Recently I made a trip from Dallas to Pensacola, FL. This was the first trip I have taken with my daughter (9 months). I tried to be as prepared as possible, so that I was not that person with the screaming child on a 3 hour flight. Here are a few inexpensive tips and tricks that I found useful:
1. A carrier was easier to for me to navigate through the airports versus a stroller. Since I was travelling without any help, I needed to be as flexible as possible. The carrier attached to my body, so I did not have to seek out elevators and other obstacles that would have to be used to accommodate the stroller.
2. Especially if you are travelling alone with a small child, remember (or learn) all of the new procedures required to go through the airport. For example, make sure your picture ID and boarding pass are easily accessible. Shoes are now required to be removed at the security area, so shoes that are easily removed and put on are best. Remember all liquids must be in quart size bags. Baby food (and breastmilk) will be checked as well, so keep it where it can easily be removed and checked at the security point. Water to mix formula must be purchased once through the checkpoint.
3. Make sure to pack your carryon bag with items to keep the child occupied. I brought puff snacks, toys, and double-sided tape to keep my daughter occupied. The snacks worked well for two reasons - it kept her busy and also kept her swallowing (which helped with the pressure). Anything the child can do to keep their hands busy or mouth full will increase your chances of keeping the child happy.
4. My pediatrician noted that the child needs to consume a bottle upon takeoff to help pop their ears.
5. Airports and flights offer a very fast-paced environment, so it is important to do your part to keep the flow moving. There are plenty of people who can help you store your carryon luggage or to help you with anything you need, so don't be afraid to ask!
6. Try not to feed your child too much liquid if possible. If you do, the child will have a very wet diaper and an airplane is definitely not a convenient place to change it. "The important to budget travel is to prepare in advance. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the actuality of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our minds. Preparation and spending our travel budget properly is a main concern for most families. Reducing consuming and charges, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed achievements and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought behind saving money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal finances is really small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, regardless of whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel charge!..". Plus, you will have to move about the airplane to even get to the restroom. If you decide to wait until you get to the next airport, your child will have been wet in for a while. So my best advice is to give minimal liquid.
7. Board as quickly as possible. This will allow you to get comfortable and situated without a full plane.
8. Take the time to prepare before you board the plane. For example, make a bottle for takeoff before you get on the plane. If the child is wet, put on a dry diaper before boarding. Flights do not always go as planned, so you want to be as prepared as possible.
9. Pack enough to be prepared for any flight delays, but do not over pack. If you do, you will be loaded down with extra weight. Make it as easy as possible on yourself!
If you have any other tips and tricks, please comment. Thank you and happy travels!
