Days away from a Rome vacation? Planned to spend Spring Break in Mexico? International travel can sometimes get a little perilous.
So what do you do when calamity breaks out and you've spent a pretty penny on travel plans?
- If you haven't booked an international trip yet, get travel insurance. All kinds of plans exist, including some where you can customize your coverage. Check out Travel Safe and you won't lose money if that mountain erupts.
- If you have already booked and don't have insurance, contact your airline and hotel to see if you can postpone your dates until a better time. Most hotels are not that difficult to cancel but because booking through a third-party vendor is easier if you don't speak the foreign language, you may have some cancellation fees. You may be able to get those fees waived if you just postpone your trip to a later date. You'll have to pay airline change fees but you can change your dates or simply ask the airlines to hold the credit until you know what you can do.
- If you decide to risk it, and take the trip anyway, be sure you check out the State Department's travel alerts and warnings. And be sure to carry the name and address of the nearest U.S. Embassy should you get into trouble.
- Also leave copies of your passport number, credit card information, and full itinerary with someone at home just in case you leave in a hurry.
