A day of romance and history at the medieval Kasteel de Haar (Photos)

Located about half an hour from busy Amsterdam is a tranquil area where you can soak in medieval European history and spot little girls in princess dresses. You can easily spend a couple of hours exploring Kasteel de Haar, a medieval castle in Utrecht province in Holland, for only a couple of bucks. The guided tours, costing only 8 Euros per person, are given in Dutch with English translations available on request. The guided English tour is given once every Sunday.

Historical references to the castle date all the way back to 1391. The castle was destroyed in 1482 and remained in ruins until 1890, when the owner Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt restored it to its present recognized state. Restoration of the castle continues to this day so expect to see some construction work when you visit.

Surrounding the castles are the lovely Rose and Roman Gardens. Completing the fairytale landscape are numerous bridges, ponds, canals, and the moat which surrounds the castle.

After visiting the castle, head to Utrecht city for lunch or dinner at one of the many restaurants lining the sunken canal to get a true Dutch experience that is sometimes hard to find in tourist-filled Amsterdam.
