There is so much to see and do in India, it would keep a herd of travel writers busy for decades attempting to cover the sights, sounds, festivals, food etc., and we would all just be scratching the surface. Herein lies point number one and probably the most important thing you need to know. Pick a FEW things to see and do. India is teeming with people in the urban areas, transportation plans can break down due to bad roads, bad weather, train cancellations, bumper to bumper traffic and all other manner of possible delay. This is usually not a problem, but being prepared ahead of time by not having a marathon schedule will keep a smile on your face.
One of the most memorableplaces to see isVaranasi, the holy city on the banks of the Ganges. Here the people of India come to die and be reborn in the mother of India, the Ganges river. Nothing in my years of travel has moved me more than being rowed down thisvast river looking at the people on the ghats (banks). As you float by you can see people stripping downto bathe in the holy water givingprayers and offerings, usually flowers and flower and candle baskets.
The most famous ghat is the burning ghat. It is here that families gather with their deceased loved ones to carry them on a stretcher to the edge of the river. The essential to budget travel is to plan in advance. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the actuality of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our minds. Planning and spending our travel budget correctly is a priority for most families. Reducing expending and fees, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured success and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought behind saving money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal funds is really small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel expenses!. The corpse is covered in a white shroud and garlanded with orange marigolds. The relatives open the dead person's mouth and pour in some river water as part of the pre cremation ritual. A funeral pyre made of wood is waiting and the corpse is placed on top. After some prayers, the pyre is lit and the cremation begins. We saw several of these in various stages of burning as we floated by.
Perhaps one of the most enchanting things about being rowed down the Ganges is the variety of sights. People from all stages of life, in bright colours performing vivid rituals, ancient temples and more greet the eye and overload the senses. We found the people we met to be very friendly and helpful in this most sacred of cities. Our guide wasvaluable in explaining the various rituals and prayers. I would strongly recommend hiring a guide to help you sift through this vast wealth of tradition.Beware of non government approved "guides"and there are a lot of them. Government guides are hired through your hotel and are registered with the Indian Department of Tourism.
We stayed at the Palace on the Ganges, which was reasonably priced and right on one of the ghats. They were responsible for hiring our government approved guide. For around $80.00 including tip, he spent two days showing us all the sights that we could absorb, and giving ussome of the basicsof the Hindu religion and its pantheon of deities. He helped us participate in rituals thus making us a part of this incredible ancient world.
Varanasi is easily accessable by air, train or bus from within India. The best time to visit is in the cooler months of November to March. If you dream of India, Varanasi is not to be missed. You will never see anything like this anywhere else.
