How easy is it to jump in your car, see a Broadway show in New York, and return to Baltimore on the same day? Perhaps it's easier than you think. I had the pleasure of taking a date to see a matinee in New York this past Wednesday. We had a fabulous time, and we even got back to Baltimore at a decent hour.
First you have to love live theatre, or want to. There are many excellent venues and opportunities to enjoy high-quality theatre in the Baltimore area. I don't think I'm going out on a limb to say that the gold standard for live theatre is Broadway. All actors and all theaters try to emulate Broadway.
Second, you have to get yourself to New York. Wednesday we departed Baltimore before 9am, drove up the New Jersey Turnpike and through the Lincoln Tunnel, and we were in Times Square around noon. Don't want to drive? There are several charter services that offer daily round trips for around $50. Check out Hunt Valley Motor Coach or Superior Tours.
Third, you don't want to spend an arm and a leg. "The important to budget travel is to prepare in advance. Considering and consuming our travel budget wisely is a consideration for most families. The thinking regarding protecting money while touring is simple: Even if your personal budget is highly limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, no matter whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel charge!..". If driving, head uptown (leaving the Lincoln Tunnel left, or North) and find parking somewhere around 60th Street. Parking near Times Square runs $15 per hour. In the vicinity of 60th Street you can find parking for $15 per day. Walk down to 45th Street and 7th Avenue and find the TKTS booth. TKTS sells unsold same-day tickets for Broadway and off-Broadway shows for a discount. Sometimes you can save as much as 50%. Of the dozen-plus shows listed, which should you pick? Check out Broadway Box or The New York Times and select four or five shows that interest you. Tickets for The Lion King and Spiderman might not be available, so you need a few alternatives.
We chose Seminar, starring Alan Rickman. Our tickets were $65 each, a 50% discount. With an hour to spend before the show we enjoyed a quick lunch, then proceeded to the theater. Our seats were in the seventh row, far left. We were (choose your superlative) floored, riveted, astounded, awestruck by this show. It was pretty good.
Afterwards stop by a pub or a coffee shop, window shop the neighborhood, or maybe even repeat the TKTS step and see an evening performance. But at least stroll somewhere - Columbus Circle, Rockefeller Center, The New York Public Library, Grand Central Station - before finding your car and heading home.
New York is easy. Check it out for a day trip and have the time of your life.
