Chesterfield County, Va. schools are very welcoming to students from countries who want to spend a year in one of their fine high schools, but what if a student in Chesterfield County wants to study abroad for a year? That is a puzzlement to many educators and high school representatives.
But the question remains, How does a Chesterfield County student become a foreign exchange student in France?
Cosby High School student (Notre Dame Lycenne) junior, Kathryn Katey Archer, is finding out, and in a series of articles you will find out the steps it took to get there. Katey will be featured in upcoming articles regarding her search for answers to her questions, starting with, How do you become a foreign exchange student?
First of all," says Katey, technically they arent really called foreign exchange students anymore as it is not very common to have one student in a country exchange or take the place of another here in the United States. "We call ourselves exchange students, but it is more of a cultural interchange," Katey clarifies. Students in other countries have a foreign language requirement and not an elective as most middle and high schools in the U.S. As Katey has found out, most French students her age are learning at least two languages.
So what are the basic things to consider and what are the minimum qualifications a high school student needs to become a student studying abroad?
- Get everyone on board. The child and the parents need to thoroughly discuss the idea of the child studying a year abroad and have a unanimous agreement regarding the decision.
- Study the language for a minimum of two years. The student should have studied the language in which he or she is interested in becoming proficient for at least two years and have steady quarterly above average (A or B) grade in the language elective, in addition to an A or B average in all classes. "The essential to budget travel is to plan onward. Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, regardless of whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!..". This qualification applies, even you decide to go to an English-speaking country.
- Decide where in the world you want to go. Research the countries where the language the child has been studying is the official language. For example, French is an official language not only of France, but Switzerland, Monaco, Madagascar, Canada, and many other countries.
- What country do you find the culture and history the most interesting and do the people have the accent you would like to acquire in that language? For instance, Canadian and Belgian French accents are dissimilar. Also, terminology may be different for many words or phrases even in English, e.g. a flashlight in N.Y., is a torch in London.
- Search for companies and organizations that specialize in students studying abroad and thoroughly check them out. Carefully look at their websites; especially the student and parent comments and read the blogs of students currently studying abroad in any country. Check with the Better Business Bureau. Then, narrow it down to your top three favorites and perform a comparison on what is provided by the company during the students stay and what additional funds are expected to be provided by the parents during their childs stay in their host country.
