In the northeast corner of Mississippi, very near the Tennessee and Alabama state lines and less than a 3-hour drive from Birmingham, you'll find the city of Corinth, MS and a surprising amount of things to see and do. This month's lineup of special events makes now an especially good time to visit. The fun kicks off with the Jacinto Fourth of July Festival at the Historic Jacinto Courthouse. Starting at 8am, this FREE all-day extravaganza will include live music, arts and crafts, a Civil War encampment, a petting zoo, and plenty of good food.

Coming up July 7-9 is the 24th Annual Slugburger Festival and before you get totally weirded out by the thoughts, you should know that a slugburger isn't made from slugs or any other form of snails. It's the name given to a scrumptious local delicacy: a beef and soymeal patty deep-fried to a golden brown and served on a hamburger bun with mustard, pickles, and onions. This event spans the entire historic downtown, with entertainment galore, carnival rides, and plenty of opportunities to sample slugburgers. Thursday night is the hugely popular Slug Idol contest, the winner of which opens the Festival on Friday night. Admission is $5 Thursday; $6 Friday; and $9 Saturday with Buddy Jewell headlining on stage.

Every Thursday night year-round there's Pickin' on the Square with local bluegrass artists offering FREE entertainment on the Courthouse Square. Just a few of the other annual events include: April's Crossroads Chili Cook-Off; September's Farmington Heritage Festival; October's Hog Wild Barbecue Cooking Festival; November's Grand Illumination; and December's Christmas Parade and Corinth Symphony Concert. Yard sale fans won't want to miss the Trash and Treasure along the Tenn-Tom coming up September 30-October 1, running along Highway 25 from Pickwick Landing State Park in TN all the way to Macon, MS with mile after mile of roadside bargains.

What's there to do any ol' time in and around Corinth? Visit: (1) The Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center, with interactive exhibits, a multimedia presentation on the Battle of Shiloh, and a video on the Battle of Corinth. (2) Corinth Contraband Camp, a new National Park Service site called the "Birthplace of Freedom," where many slaves found refuge before the end of the Civil War; features a quarter-mile trail, along which are seven life-size bronze statues (photo, right) depicting people who lived there. (3) Jacinto Courthouse, an 1854 Federal-style building surrounded by the Courthouse Square, a park, walking trails, a country store, and RV hookups. (4) Borroum's Drug Store, the oldest store in continuous operation in Mississippi; houses Native American and Civil War artifacts and includes an authentic old time soda fountain featuring - you guessed it - their own $1.75 version of Corinth's famous slugburger. (5) Corinth Artist Guild Gallery, with an impressive collection of Southern regional art. And admission to all these spots is FREE.

The Crossroads Museumis another bargain at $5 adults; $3 seniors, military, and students; and FREE for ages 16 and under. Displays depict Corinth's vital role in the Civil War as the intersection of the Memphis and Charleston Railroad and the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. Closed due to recent flooding, the Corinth Coca-Cola Museum has added a gallery to the Crossroads, essentially giving you two museums for the price of one.

Antique lovers will find shops galore, particularly on Cruise Street and Highway 72. A must-see shop for Civil War buffs is C&D Jarnigan on Fillmore Street.

In addition to Borroum's Drug Store soda fountain, you'll find great budget dining at Abe's Grill on Highway 72, with seven different meat biscuits at breakfast, starting at only $1.38, plus great burgers and sandwiches for lunch. Also on 72 is Country Boy Cafe, serving three meals a day with daily plate lunch specials. Martha's Menu on Taylor Street offers a fine $3 breakfast.

Where to stay? Without a doubt the top spot in Corinth is Franklin Cruise Luxury Hotel Suite, posh accommodations in the heart of downtown, making most everything easy walking distance. "The key to budget travel is to plan in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our minds. Arranging and expending our travel budget properly is a priority for most families. Minimizing consuming and fees, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed achievement and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind saving money while journeying is simple: Even if your personal budget is incredibly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, regardless of whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel expenses!..". First night rates are $139 for one bedroom, one bath and $159 for two bedrooms, two baths; a discount applies after the first night. Other out-of-the-ordinary accommodations to consider: (1) Crossroads Cottage; (2) The Suites at Belhaven; and (3) The Generals' Quarters B&B Inn.
