If a trip to Utah for the Sundance Film Festival this weekend wasnt in the economic cards, dont worry -- there are plenty of other regional festivals out there to satiate your cinephile hunger. Some, like the one Feb. 6-8 in my hometown of Oxford, Miss., offer -- in my opinion -- a much better travel destination than the celebrity-laden ski slopes of Utah. If the lure of a thriving arts, music and nightlife scene nestled in the rolling hills of a not-so-sleepy Southern town isnt enough to entice you to make the trek, perhaps the festivals showcase films will.
The festivals impressive lineup includes the world premiere of Crude Independence, a feature-length documentary about the oil exploration boom in western North Dakota. If nothing else, the cinematography of Big Sky country should provide a spectacular piece of armchair travel. Another notable screening is that of Ballast, which won directorial and cinematography awards at last years Sundance Festival, about a boy in the impoverished Mississippi Delta struggling to come to terms with his fathers death. Two films Im particularly keen to see draw on similar themes of race relations. Bama Girl is about a black womans quest to become Homecoming Queen at the University of Alabama, where a segregated Greek system and a secret all-white political organization known as the Machine attempt to thwart her. And Prom Night in Mississippi, fresh out of Sundance, chronicles the first desegregated prom at Charleston High School in the Mississippi Delta.
Oxford is located about 50 miles south of Memphis, Tenn., which has the nearest commercial airport. Driving from the District takes about 15 hours. The city has plenty of hotel accommodations and eateries. And when youre tired of sitting in a darkened theater, get out and explore some of the literary haunts or wander through the magnolias on the campus of the University of Mississippi.
