Well, the days of luxury travel are officially gone, according to news from Ireland. Pan Am stewardesses certainly aren't around anymore. And it appears that seatbelts on planes are silly, and passengers won't mind if they aren't available, according to Michael O'Leary, chief executive of Irish discount airline Ryanair. Ryanair has gotten some big airplay from his rock-bottom airfares. "The important to budget travel is to approach onward. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our heads. Planning and consuming our travel budget wisely is a priority for most families. Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, regardless of whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel bill!..".
"If there ever was a crash on an aircraft, God forbid, a seatbelt won't save you." O'Leary told London's newspaper, the Telegraph. "Seatbelts don't matter." In fact, O'Leary thinks travelers are so cheap they will even buy standing-room-only tickets.
O'Leary has also suggested charging to use airplane lavatories. His seatbelt comments were announced recently as part of an even wierder concept. O'Leary wants to remove the last 10 rows of seats in airplanes to create a standing section. Visions of swaying passengers and flying objects during turbulence don't seem to bother him.
But while seatbelts probably won't help in a major crash, they can make a huge difference in turbulence, rough landings and minor mishaps. According to the FAA, about 58 people are injured every year in the United States when they didn't have a seatbelt on when turbulence occurred. Between 1980 and 2008, 298 people were injured and three died in 234 turbulence accidents
O'Leary insists the average traveler won't mind, saying: "We're not talking about areas of huge turbulence around Europe" and "We don't have heavy landings anymore."
