Summer Travel Rules

The busy summer travel season is nigh. New Yorks John F. Kennedy Airport, has just finished repairing one the four runways and maintenance of another major runway is scheduled to begin this summer until 2010. It has been reported that airplanes have been falling into a huge pothole during taxi that requires a tug to pull aircraft out. This process can take up an hour. Thus causing a backlog in the flow if aircraft traffic, resulting in delays. A travelers delight.

Historically, airlines increase frequency and routes during the summer to fill the seats with summer vacationers. For instance, New York based, Jetblue Airways operates seasonally from JFK to Cape Cod in the summer.

When planning air travel, passengers are left at the mercies of the weather and the airlines good graces in the end. In the beginning, however, it is a self-service task. Most people choose the destination, the airline and the price they are willing pay by themselves.

Air travel is very fickle industry. Airlines dont pay their passengers a penalty when they delay, cancel or bump someone off a flight. However, passengers are required to shell out big penalty fees when they want to make simple flight change in the itinerary. We are definitely a captive market. But amongst all the calamity, the ease in air travel neednt be obsolete. Follow these tips for surviving the trials of summer air travel.

Know Your Rights

Fliers who dont know what they are entitled to in the event of cancellations and bumping are liable to get less than what they are entitled. Familiarize yourself with the airlines policies and arm yourself with that information when negotiating compensation.

Be Flexible

We all know travel can be hard and cost more than what youd really like to pay. Expect the best, but prepare for the worst is a good rule of thumb to follow in this unpredictable industry. Always have a Plan B. What will you do if you are stranded at the airport overnight? Research airport hotels and keep the number handy. Its better then sleeping on the airport floor. Sign up for travel alerts on www.Flghtstats.com. Sometimes youll receive news about delays, gate changes and cancellations before the gate agent. Want to know when to give up hope when your plane is delayed for hours on end? Ask your flight crew how much duty time theyve accrued. The FAA restricts pilots from flying over eight hours. The flight attendants duty time is double that of a pilots, but if there is no one to fly the plane then whats the sense?

Be an Early Riser

Those ubiquitous summer thunderstorms usually, develop in the late afternoon. Set your departure time for a flight before 10 am to reduce the risk to getting caught in delays. If you take the first flight out youll be on the beach, in your rental car with shades on, or having lunch at your destination whilst the other late risers are gripping at the airport.

Never check the essentials.

Dont give the TSA or the airport something you cannot live without. The Packing Plan recommends that you keep important items such as passports, medication, valuable papers and small electronics in your carry-on. Also pack that suit for your 9am meeting. The proof is in the statistics: one person on a flight arrives without their luggage. Do you want to be the last person to leave the carousel after watching your seatmates grab their bags and walk briskly out? Also make sure you put identification inside your bag. Drop a business card or fill out an extra luggage tag. Luggage tags tend to get torn off during transport from the ticket counter to the airplanes belly.

Know that we are in this together

That includes the airline and the airport crews. Because of this delay, that flight attendant cant get home either. Its not the gate agents fault the flight got cancelled and suddenly theres a long line of disgruntled passengers in front of her and theres this one jerk yelling as if she vetoed this huge inconvenience in his life. Sure the gate agents can be curt, and flight attendants seem as if they dont want to be bothered, but they have been beaten down by countless delays. Let them know calmly, how youve been affected and tell them you sympathize with them for dealing with multiple cancellations and delays. This simple gesture may result in a fee waiver, an upgrade or miles. Also be kind to your fellow traveler. Let the person behind you know that youre going to recline. Do you have an extra headset?
