Southwest Airlines continues to make headlines in the airline industry. The carrier has just announced that it is offering a special introductory rate of just $5 per flight for wi-fi internet service. This offer is for any type of device, whether it be handheld or a laptop computer. The $5 rate is for any flight length, so the rate is even more attractive for long-haul travelers.
At the present time, Dallas-based Southwest has just 32 wi-fi enabled aircraft with the expectation that 60 aircraft will be offering internet service by the end of this year. The airline operates the worlds largest fleet of Boeing 737s with more than 550 currently in service. Working with Row 44 and its satellite-based technology, Southwest plans to have its full fleet wi-fi operational by the end of 2012.
So, how will you know if your upcoming Southwest flight will have wi-fi on-board? The carrier has that question covered in advance, and will be sending email notification to passengers scheduled to fly on aircraft with wi-fi accessibility. Itll be good to know before you fly whether to bring your laptop along.
From Minneapolis/St. Paul, Southwest flies non-stop to Chicago-Midway, St. Louis, Denver and Phoenix, with connections available at each of these destinations to nearly 70 additional cities. Service is from Terminal 2/Humphrey, and as always, is via full-size Boeing 737 aircraft.
Southwest is in the process of acquiring discount carrier AirTran Airways in a deal that is expected to receive federal approval and close next year. AirTran was the first U.S. carrier to boast that its entire fleet of Boeing 717 and 737 aircraft offered in-flight internet access.
