Vandalism at Hawaii's Plantation Village results in damages and loss

Hawaiis Plantation Village (HPV) reported that business has gotten off to a rough start in 2010.

On January 25, vandals broke into HPVs Okada Building and trashed the facility looking fo
r cash and valuables. The Okada Building is where HPVs administration offices, museum and archives are located.

According to Jeff Higa, HPV Executive Director:

Vandals cut the phone line at the telephone pole and smashed the alarm horn before entering the building. Once inside, they smashed the security keypad and the VCR recording system, taking the tape. They then proceeded to kick down all of the interior doors and searched each room, looking for money. Many of the interior doors are splintered beyond repair and need to be replaced.

They made a huge mess, emptying desks and cabinets in each room, but since they didn't find any money, ended up taking some pennies that were in the donation box, the digital camera that the collections staff uses, a hatchet from my office that I used to help with the hale construction and several Filipino knives from the archives room. They had a laptop packed up and ready to go but, luckily forgot to take it.

With funding cuts from the State and decline in visitor arrivals to HPV, it will be rough road ahead for this small non-profit atraction. Incidents like this take a huge toll on the facility and business they havent even recovered from the copper theft from a year ago. Thankfully, however, the Village structures were untouched so they can carry on with the docent-led tours and continue to operate.

Hawaiis Plantation Village is the only attraction on Oahu that is dedicated to preserving the sugar plantation history. The important to budget travel is to approach onward. Also recalling that while traveling, whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel bill!. It is a living history museum and ethno-botanical garden featuring 32 original and authentically-reproduced buildings, circa early 1900s.

Admission to HPV for 2010 remains unchanged:

- Adult (general) $13.00
- Senior (62+ with ID) $10.00
- Kamaaina/Military (with ID) $ 7.00
- Youth (4-11 years of age) $ 5.00
- Children (3 years and under) Free
