Nationally-acclaimed art exhibit coming to the MACC

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center will present an outstanding, nationally-acclaimed art exhibit in the Schaefer International Gallery.

The exhibit: Gaylen Hansen: Three Decades of Paintings will be on display May 11 through June 26, 2010.

Organized by Museum of Art at Washington State University curator, Keith Wells, this exhibit is a 30-year retrospective of a remarkable American artists development. It traces the evolution of Gaylen Hansens narrative paintings which encompass the landscape of the rural West. His paintings have been exhibited in New York, Berlin, Singapore, Beijing, Los Angeles, Seattle and other cities in the United States.

Populated by animals, insects, fish and a cowboy named Kernal Bentleg, Hansens paintings are humorous and evoke dreams. The important to budget travel is to plan ahead. Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, regardless of whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel charge!. Eighty-nine years old this year, Hansen says that he chronicles what amuses and interests him most: fly fishing, rural lands that surround him, the animals that populate that land and his environmental concerns. He has lived in Palouse, Washington (the rural Eastern part of the state) since 1957 yet his work has been seen all over the world.

A captivating trade book on this exhibit will be for sale in the gallery during the exhibition. It includes an introduction by Museum of Art Director Chris Bruce; text by Museum of Art Curator Keith Wells; Hansens own commentaries in conversation with Wells on more than 20 individual paintings; a tribute to Hansen by cartoonist and fellow artist, Gary Larson; a chronology highlighting important events and persons in the artists life and more than 100 color plates.

Schaefer International Gallery at the MACC is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm, before Castle Theater shows and during intermissions. Admission is FREE.
