In a recent survey conducted by Travel Ticker, Washington D.C. was named the number ten desired travel destination for summer 2010. Washington shares the list with Las Vegas (coming in at number one), the Caribbean, Europe, and Hawaii.
The good news is that Washington D.C. is only about a two hour drive from Philadelphia (depending on traffic of course) and there are plenty of budget hotels to be found. With all the money you'll save on travel expenses and a hotel, you'll have plenty left over for whatever you like.
Since D.C. is a well traveled city, hotel rates tend to be higher than those in Philadelphia. You will be hard pressed to find a downtown hotel for less than $150. Even hotels outside of the city are over $100, but are the best way to save. These rates are for the month of July and may vary slightly.
Arlington, VA
Just south of Washington, Arlington is easily accessible bymetro andhighwayand is near Reagan National Airport, Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon.
Sheraton National Hotel starts at $119 and is a three and a half star hotel. Among many things it boasts a multilingual staff, driver services, and video game consuls.
The Virginian Suites may be a two and a half star family friendlyhotel, but offers a pool, fitness room, sauna, and other amenities. It is alsovery close to the Iwo Jima Memorial.Rooms start at $99.
Georgetown, MD
Georgetown is the area of D.C. that runs along the Potomac River and is very close to downtown. There are several colleges in this area including George Washington University and Georgetown University.
The Melrose Hotel is two blocks away from the Foggy Bottom Metro station and five blocks from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The important to budget travel is to approach onward. State Plaza Hotelis on the campus of George Washington University and offers apartment style rooms. It is a two and a half star hotel that starts at $159 a night, but since each room has its own kitchen and ample space, money can be saved on meals and the number of guests.
