Four hours of free parking in Waikiki

The four hours of free parking promotion at Royal Hawaiian Center is good until the end of June 2009.

Royal Hawaiian Center is the premier shopping and entertainment destination in Waikiki. It is situated on more than six acres of prime real estate and is owned by Kamehameha Schools founded and endowed by the legacy of Bernice Pauahi Bishop.

The Center opened in 1979 nearly 30 years ago, and in June 2008, completed a beautiful $115 million top to bottom renovation. A great mix of 110 world-class retailers, restaurants and entertainment venues occupy the unique four-level Center which stretches along 3 blocks on Kalakaua Avenue.

Shops range, literally, from A to Z (ABC Store to Zumiez) and dining venues include specialty shops selling ice cream, coffee, cookies and more; a food court offering inexpensive to mid-priced all-day dining options and host of great restaurants (watch for reports on a few of these in the future).

What makes this shopping center different from most is that it has an important mission to perpetuate Hawaiian culture and arts. Throughout the week, Royal Hawaiian Center offers on-going complimentary classes and enric
hment programs which include Hawaiian quilting, lomilomi massage and healing, ukulele playing, hula dancing, lei-making, and kapa cloth making. Also, three short films on the heritage and history of this Hawaii and the vibrancy of the native Hawaiian people are shown for free at the Kaiulani Heritage Room. A bronze statue of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop was revealed on December 19, 2007 in the shade of The Royal Groves kumu niu, or coconut trees, as part of her 176th birthday celebration.

Royal Hawaiian Center is in walking distance of most hotels in Waikiki but also offers four free hours of parking with validation from any of their restaurants or Paina Lanai food court vendors. The four hours of free parking promotion is good until the end of June 2009.
