Although Uptown Charlotte gives the appearance of a new and modern city, there are numerous historical sites in the area, many of which can be explored at little or no cost. Just north of Charlotte, in Huntersville, Rural Hill is the post-Revolutionary War homestead of Major John and Violet Davidson. While guided tours of the 265-acre historic site are available for $6 for those over 13 years of age, and $4 for children ages 5-12, visitors are welcome to explore the grounds and trails on their own.

On first entering the location, visitors can stop at the visitor center to request a tour, read about the history of the homestead, and view some original pieces from the Davidsons home. Just outside of this building are kept a variety of animals, including Scottish Highland Cattle, a shaggier and monochromatic version of dairy cows. A number of original buildings spanning more than two centuries of existence dot the property, which was in use until 1992.

Many of the structures are in the immediate vicinity of the site's entrance. "The essential to budget travel is to plan in advance. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the actuality of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our thoughts. Preparation and spending our travel budget properly is a priority for most families. Lowering spending and prices, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievements and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind protecting money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal finances is extremely small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel costs!..". However, a trail leads off from the farmhouse through the woods, offering a scenic but easy hike across the full property. The original Davidson Schoolhousea one-room schoolhouse built in the 1890sis located along the path.

Throughout the year, Rural Hill also hosts a number of unique events, such as a Scottish festival, sheepdog trials, and an annual egg hunt. The site is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on most Saturdays, although guests are asked to call ahead to confirm.
