After a rash of accidents in the Shreveport area, as well as across Louisiana, many riders are thinking about motorcycle awareness and education. Many are outraged at the small penalties doled out for offenders who turn in front of riders, failing to yield, and in many cases, kill the rider. As I said before, there are many things you can do. Get involved with organizations that promote safety and awarenss, as well as those that support legislation that supports riders. Take a motorcycle safety course, and hone your skills. Pretend you are invisible when you're riding, and always pay attention to your surroundings. With that said, I'd like to share the following commentary that Greg Taylor, a friend and fellow rider sent me. "The important to budget travel is to plan in advance. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our thoughts. Preparation and spending our travel budget properly is a concern for most families. Minimizing expending and charges, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed achievements and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding economizing money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal finances is highly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, regardless of whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel bill!..". According to Greg, this all came to light last week when a 19 year old driving under suspension, no insurance killed a biker Tues night and left the scene. She got out on $1050 bail. For $105 she is back on the street. His memorial is tomorrow morning. The fiancee has requested as many bikes as possible to attend. Please pass this article on and share on FaceBook and other social media so we can get the word out to "watch for bikers".
Greg's daughter Molly Taylor said:
"Someone asked my Dad if he was afraid of riding his motorcycle. If she would have asked me I would have said I was scared for him, but I know this is what "he does". His response almost had me in tears for the fact that he was literally hit by an 18-wheeler on the interstate several years ago, and it scared me to death to even think that he was wanting to buy another motorcycle shortly after the accident. But, that is dad. He also rides for the Patriot Guard Riders, who pay respect to Veterans, or Fallen Hero's who serve or have served our country at their funeral or memorial services. This is what he loves, and I wanted to share his answer to everyone to raise awareness on how important it is to WATCH out for everyone on the road!!!! Always look for motocycles!"

"Daddycakes, it does scare me that you ride a bike.. But if you didn't- then how would I describe you to people? You wouldn't be "the big bald headed guy who rides a harley".. :). People do need to be more aware and that is what scares me. (...Also, what scares me is the time we were coming home from the peach festival and the 18 wheeler threw a large piece of wood that cut my leg) but other than that, what scares me are the people who are riding with you and the others riding towards you. People don't know the severity until they take the time to ride a motorcycle themselves and feel the "free" feeling and also realize that when they fall or that they could fall off and there is nothing to catch them. Well said, Daddycakes!"

"I've been riding for 36 years and been asked many times- aren't you scared of riding a bike? NO! My bike is maintenanced, air in tires, gas tank is full and oil changed. My bike is in full working order. What I am scared of is YOU, the one riding in 4 wheels. A biker has to be more observant of their surroundings, alert and ready to swerve, dodge and try to miss what comes at them. We watch for cars pulling out in front of us, a ball rolling across the street and a child right behind it not looking, a dog chasing you trying to bite your leg, a deer jumping out of the woods and debris of tire tread, road kill and more in our path. You riding in 4 wheels may be distracted by your passengers, on the phone or texting, had a bad day or fussing with your spouse but be aware of us. I am on the road also, see me!! Yes I choose to ride a bike but you also choose to use the same road with me. And hear this- I GIVE YOU PERMISSION- You will NOT offend me- if I am hit and down- I may be a gruesome sight to look at but if I am breathing PRAY over me and even if I am dead PRAY for my family for peace, comfort and understanding. Please cagers watch out for us, we watch out for you."
