Recently, I had the pleasure of spending a couple of nights at the Ala Moana Hotel a long-time favorite of kamaaina (Hawaii residents like me), corporate travelers (very close to the Hawaii Convention Center), groups (lots of meeting space options) and, of course, leisure travelers (close to the ocean and Ala Moana Center).
The Ala Moana Hotel offers many amenities to guests and visitors. It has a huge port cochere (I used valet parking instead of dealing with self-parking), spacious lobby, multiple restaurants, nightclub, pool, fitness center, spa, free WiFi, its a regular trolley stop and more.
Accessing guest room floors is with keycard only a great security measure. I booked and paid the kamaaina rate for a room and was (luckily) upgraded to a beautiful ocean front suite in the Waikiki Tower the bedroom room had a balcony, king bed and flat-screen TV. There was a spacious bath with a tub/shower combination and living room with kitchen facilities, breakfast table and another flat-screen TV. Although I did not do any cooking while I was there, I did make use of the refrigerator and coffee maker. I also made time to enjoy a movie.
On my quick tour of the hotel:
- Kona Tower accommodations offer city and mountain views but have no balcony
- Theres a nice sundries store/gift shop and a cute store thats run by the Girl Scouts
- Plantation Caf offers a great buffet breakfast, the excellent Royal Garden Restaurant serves Chinese fare including dim sum and Yuzu - offers healthy, stylish Japanese cuisine in a casual setting
- The 36th floor restaurant space with killer views (formerly Aarons, Nicholas Nicholas and The Summit) is undergoing a complete refurbishment and will re-open sometime during the first quarter of 2013 with a fine dining restaurant called Signature Prime Steak & Seafood Im told that the owner promises it will be affordable
- There was a meeting of the Red Hat Society - the international society dedicated to reshaping the way women are viewed in today's culture. "The key to budget travel is to prepare onward. - It is adjacent to Ala Moana Center - the worlds largest outdoor shopping center and Hawaiis premier shopping, entertainment, and dining destination with 290 stores, including nearly 70 dining options
- The Ala Moana Hotels slogan is Honolulus Landmark Hotel and it that indeed for 20 years, it was the tallest building in Hawaii (1970-1990) and today, it still ranks at 10
