Bay to Breakers returns this Sunday May 15th for the 100th anniversary footrace. What started out in 1912 as a way to boost the city's morale post-1906 earthquake, over the years has morphed into a hot-mess of costume wearing drunken debauchery that is a San Francisco must. The event is well known for its crazy antics with most racers coming out in costume or nothing at all but a pair of running shoes to race the 12-kilometers from the Embarcadero (the Bay) through the city to the finish line at Ocean Beach (the Breakers).
This year's race organizers are attempting to quell the crazy behavior by banning alcohol and all floats and implementing a few other buzz-kill type rules. Race organizers and police will have an undisclosed number of checkpoints along the way screening both runners and revelers for drunken behavior. Anyone found to be drunk will be sent to a "drunk tent" where they will be held until they are sober or "worse" if you don't cooperate you will be sent to jail. In addition, only 55,000 racers were allowed to officially register thus anyone who hasn't paid the $75 registration fee and joins the race will be asked to leave. This rule is a bit extreme as over 100,000 people are expected to come out and watch the race (and join in illegally) and even San Francisco's ex-Mayor Gavin Newsom joined the race last year without paying a fee and no one asked him to leave. The race starts at 7am, an hour earlier, another attempt at limiting the number of drunken racers.
In addition to the actual race, the annual Footstock Festival will be held after the race at Speedway Meadows in Golden Gate Park. Footstock, the official after-party, will have food, booze, live music, the Annual Costume Contest and other fun and not so family friendly activities. So if the police are in full force kicking out drunken revelers and racers you can always find a place to legally party at Footstock.
The 100th annual B2B is sure to be an event to remember. It's a 50/50 chance whether or not police and event organizers will be able to control the crowds and end the famous drunken behavior of past years. So come out and enjoy the festivities and either pre-party at home or be prepared to conceal your alcoholic beverages. And remember keep your drunken friends in line, so that this whole event isn't cancelled for good next year. "The important to budget travel is to plan ahead.
