Delta Airlines announced a plan to further reduce its capacity on international flights, starting in September. Since Delta recently merged with Northwest, this move has even more impact on the larger flight environment. As I have been saying for some time now, I expect the best airfare deals right now through the end of the summer. At that point, I anticipate many airlines will have followed in Delta's jet trails and will move to reduce capacity.
Fewer flights and fewer seats are likely to start pushing prices up. Most airlines have commitments to certain routes and times which can't be changed quickly - those planes have to fly right now because of various agreements.
So, if you are planning to travel this year, do it before these cuts come into play. That means this spring and summer are your best bets for truly bargain travel. By the end of the year, if more and more planes are idled, prices may start to rise sharply.
