Halloween in California's Wine Country

If your idea of trick-or-treating has grown up a bit, you may find spending Halloween in California's Wine Country an entertaining way of observing the holiday. The leaves on the vines are turning color and both Sonoma and Napa counties offer incredible fall vistas, with winding roads taking you to numerous wineries. (Drink responsibly - or those winding roads may be even windier after you leave the tasting room.)

Spooky Places and Events for Halloween in Wine Country

Built to resemble a medieval castle, the Castello di Amorosa winery in Napa Valley offers tours of its extensive property, including a visit to the castle's "Torture Chamber". Call 1707 967 6272 to book tour reservations.

Over in Geyserville in Sonoma County, the Isis Oasis Sanctuary features Egyptomania-inspired architecture. This is admittedly one of my favorite "haunts". This year, the Isis Rising Music Festival runs from October 31st to November 2nd, with an Egyptian-themed costume ball as a centerpiece. Tickets for the festival are available through Sacred Water Stream.

In Santa Rosa, the vaunted-as-haunted Bartholomew Park Winery attracts would-be ghosthunters. This property, a former insane asylum with a morgue in the basement, is said to boast a number of ghosts. It offers regular wine tastings but hey - I can't resist - you may find their wines may be more "spirited" than usual.

Over at the No Chance Ranch Haunted House, kids and adults will enjoy this extensive,inexpensiveHalloween experience. which harks back to the agricultural roots of Sonoma County. There's a pumpkin patch, a hay ride, the haunted house, and a "chicken" house for the easily frightened.
