Make a pilgrimage to the ruins of...Indianapolis?

You don't need to travel to Athens or Rome to find some spectacular ruins. In fact, if you live in Indianapolis, you don't even have to leave the city.

You probably won't see as many visitors to the ruins of Holliday Park as you would encounter at, say, the Roman Colosseum or the Parthenon in Athens. This site never hosted any ancientreligious rituals or gladiators.

But theruins in Indianapolis have a different kind of intrigue: they were designed as ruins. There was never a practical structure at all but, instead, an artist's vision for the site.

Or, to be blunt, they are fake...sort of.

More specifically the ruins at Holliday Parkwere built as a new and very different home forthree statuesknown as "The Races of Man" that once graced the facade of the St. Paul Buildingin New York. After the building was demolished, Indianapolis artist Elmer Taflinger took the old statues (originally designed by Karl Bitter decades before) and designed the ruins around them using a hodgepodge of pieces from several demolished buildings to give the site a history all its own.
