An inexpensive way to enjoy a tropical getaway
There is a misconception when it comes to cruises. The misconception that cruises are expensive. In fact, cruises can be a very inexpensive way to enjoy a tropical getaway. When it comes to cruises, the options are endless. How about cruising the Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera, the Mediterranean, Alaska, or Hawaii? The options go on and on! Its almost impossible to choose your cruise (OK, so the rhyming is a little too cutesy I knowI just couldnt resist).
When you have a limited budget, a cruise is the best way to vacation. The important to budget travel is to approach in advance. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our heads. Planning and spending our travel budget properly is a priority for most families. Lowering consuming and fees, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain achievement and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding economizing money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal finances is incredibly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, no matter whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a big vacation or travel expenses!. You not only get to visit one destination, but you get to visit several destinations all within the course of a few days.
The price of a cruise includes your room, food and non-alcoholic beverages for the duration of your trip. Although prices vary, a 3-4 night Caribbean cruise for an inside cabin is about $300 per person. This price includes your room and ALL of your foodas much food as you could possibly want to eatany time of dayyoull find a buffet (I knowmore rhymes). Expect for the cabin prices to jump up based on the deck you are on. Decks higher to the top of the ship are pricier. Also, cabins with windows and balconies are pricier too, obviously.
The most budget friendly cruise for us Charlestonians would be a Caribbean cruiseeastern, western, southern, your choice because we have cheap airfare to Florida which is where the majority of these cruises depart.
Room with a view
Inside cabins are a great value because you wont be spending much time in your cabin anyway. Unless youre suffering from severe sea sickness, youll either be on excursions at your port of call, lounging by the pool, stretching that waist line at the midnight buffet or attending any one of the hundreds of activities happening on the ship, so dont waste your money on a room with a view. Youll have the same view anywhere else on the ship for free.
Excursions
The excursions at each port of call is what can add up to be expensiveswimming with dolphins, zip lining through the Belizean junglethose are fun, but pricey. Dont worry; there are some affordable options as well.
Grab a cab to the local beach if youre on a tropical cruise or take the tour of the port of call excursion. Every cruise has the port of call tour excursion where you can explore the city and island and its usually the cheapest excursion option. Or, if youre feeling brave enough, explore the port of call on your own. Just remember to make it back in time for the ship to leave because it will NOT wait on you and it will be up to you to make it to the next port of call at your own expense.
Also, dont spend your money on food at each port of call. You can hop on and off the ship as much as you want while its docked. So when its lunch timehop back on the ship, eat and hop back off to do some more exploring.
Other money traps to avoidor notyou are on vacation
- Repeat after me, SeaPass card = danger. Yes, you do have to have them since that is the only currency used aboard the ships. However, the SeaPass cards are linked to your credit card or debit card, so its not free money. A lot of people, myself included, have been surprised when they get their final bill on how much they have racked up on that little card. Check your balances every day; youll likely be spending more than you think you are.
- Emergency use only. Avoid the shops on the shipthey are very expensive and you could buy that stuff online anyway. Unless its an absolute emergency, like you are out of Dramamine then dont even bother bringing your SeaPass card with you as you are out and about on the ship.
- As nice as it is, the spa unfortunately is the most expensive place on the ship. It is nice to treat yourself however if you cana half hour massage will run you about $65. If youre going to spend that much, might as well go for the hour long massage.
- Alcoholic beverages are expensive toobut, you are on vacation and it is hard to resist those all too cool pineapple drinkslive a little.
My cruise line of choice
There are many cruise lines to choose fromPrincess, Celebrity,Norwegian, Carnival, Royal Caribbeanthe list goes on. Ive been on three cruises and have used two different cruise linesCarnival andRoyal Caribbean. Both are very nice, but my personal pick is Carnival because there seems to be a livelier crowd and the food is by far the tastiest.
