The vacation is booked and now reality has hit. You're traveling with a child, or maybe more than one. And you aren't sure where to begin.
What should you take and what to buy there? How can you get all this stuff in your luggage? Will the airline let you take it all on the plane?
Here a few tips for making your trip lighter, cheaper, and hopefully more peaceful:
- Take a few minutes a month before the trip to really plan. A great web site that will help you is Travel for Kids. Even better, do this before you book anything and find some family friendly hotels and locations.
- Think through what equipment you are going to really need to take on the plane. Usually you don't need to buy special travel gear; what you have will work. If you are flying you can still check a car seat per child for free, and you can gate check your stroller right before you board. But if you are going to be renting a car on the other end, consider renting a car seat from car rental agency as well. If you have AAA, you can get a free child seat from Hertz included in your rental. Otherwise, you'll pay $5-$10/day to rent one. We check one and get a free one for our second child to save our backs.
- Be sure to request a cot crib or pack'n'play in your hotel room. Most hotels offer this service at no charge; no need to haul your pack'n'play around.
- If you don't want to mess with a stroller but think you may need one, see if you can rent one at your destination.
- With most airlines charging to check bags, you might want to consider packing very few diapers and baby food and buying on the other end. The important to budget travel is to prepare onward. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new spots we have never been before, the actuality of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our thoughts. Organizing and consuming our travel budget carefully is a main concern for most families. Curbing spending and prices, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain success and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind economizing money while touring is simple: Even if your personal budget is really small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, no matter whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel expenses!. You can also use a service like Babies Travel Lite.com and have necessary baby items shipped to you. The cost might balance out to the cost of checking that second bag, but if it is going to save you a headache, it could be worth it.
- A few days before your trip, make a good travel packing list. Or alter a pre-made one like this one from 50 Things and Beyond to suit your needs. You need to give yourself a couple of days though so you can make a last minute trip to the store for anything you may have forgotten. And to make sure it all fits in your bags.
