The Minnesota Horse Expo, taking place at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul, begins today and for the horse enthusiast, this is the event you've been counting down since last year. In addition to the annual staples of the "Parade of Breeds", horse/pony rides and a variety of presentations; you can expect to find many budget-friendly opportunities for the family.

The Minnesota Horse Expo is sponsored by the Minnesota Horse Council and occurs every year during the last weekend in April. The Expo began in April of 1982 and has grown nearly every year since. The MHC works to "support our state's horse industry through education, funding, communication and promotion of horse-related activities." The Expo is a non-profit event and the "funds generated by the Expo are used by the Council to support MHC's scholarships, grants, direct funding and trail improvement grants." Not only is this event inexpensive, educational and fun; it is also for a very good cause.

This year the Expo offers many training demonstrations and symposiums for horse lovers: this includes current horse owners, weekend crusaders (those who lease a horse or take lessons) and those who just appreciate the horse and cannot have one. Visitors at the Expo can choose from lectures and clinics, demonstrations, vendor exhibits, walking through the horse barn, horse and pony rides, free carriage rides and more. This year's must-sees are the Cavallo Equestrian Arts performers, the "Own Responsibly" seminar series and Kate Chenery Tweedy.

The Cavallo Equestrian Arts performers are among the last equestrian artists still performing in all equestrian specialty disciplines such as bareback riding, Cossack riding, and liberty. This group can be seen all three days of the Expo throughout the weekend.

The "Own Responsibly" seminar series takes place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and covers the basic knowledge needed for responsible ownership. This four-hour series features four different speakers on topics including new horse ownership, equine behavior, nutrition and essential health care. As an incentive to participate, twenty vouchers worth up to $200 towards the gelding of a stallion/colt will be given away to attendees of all four lectures. This voucher can be used for your personal horse or donate the voucher to a non-profit hooved animal rescue that could certainly use the donation.

Kate Chenery Tweedy is the daughter of Penny Chenery, the owner of one of our nation's most famous racehorses, Secretariat. Tweedy will discuss what Secretariat meant to her and her family, how it felt to watch him win the 1973 Triple Crown and will answer questions about the movie made about her mother and her famous horse. Tweedy can be seen and heard throughout the weekend.

For those in search something to satisfy their fair-food craving, a variety of vendors, including many who are at the Minnesota State Fair, can be found at the Expo.

The charge of admission for adults is $9, youth (6-12)/seniors (62+) is $6 and children 5 and under are free. The PRCA Rodeo tickets can be purchased separately and range in price (depending on seating) from $4 to $10. The Expo starts Friday, April 27 and runs through Sunday, April 29. The gates open 8:30 a.m. and gates close at 9:30 p.m. "The key to budget travel is to plan in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the truth of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our heads. Arranging and expending our travel budget properly is a consideration for most families. Reducing expending and charges, while still savoring your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed success and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind economizing money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal finances is really limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, regardless of whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel charge!..". on Friday and Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday. The PRCA Rodeo begins at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday. For a complete schedule for this weekend's Minnesota Horse Expo, please visit the Expo website at www.mnhorseexpo.org.
