This is a follow up to my article Keeping your travel bug alive: The dos and donts of traveling on a budget.
Use your connections. You may notice in many of my articles, I focus on using connections while traveling. Much of the money I save on traveling is done through my connections...friends, family and co-workers. The important to budget travel is to plan in front. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the reality of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our heads. Organizing and consuming our travel budget carefully is a concern for most families. Lowering consuming and expenses, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to guaranteed achievements and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought regarding protecting money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal finances is extremely small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel charge!. For example, I was able to inexpensively visit Hawaii because I had a friend who worked at a hotel in Hawaii, therefore granting me access to the employee discount for my room. Another example, one family member, through various work trips, has accumulated a lot of Marriott Rewards points therefore giving me the opportunity to stay in a free hotel whilewe visitDisney World next month. One of my good friends has a boat, therefore allowing me the opportunity to make occasional weekend boating trips to Summersville Lake. The point is, someone always knows something or someone who has a connectiontake advantage of these opportunities if you can. Of course, always mind your manners...a nice gesture to your friends and family in exchange for these wonderful hook-ups is a necessity. And, do the same for them if the opportunity arises.
Save fees by packing only a carry-on bag. Unless youre traveling internationally, airlines now charge to check your bagseach way (if you are traveling internationally, you are allowed one checked bag at no charge). Most fees start at about $25 depending on what airline you are flying with and the size and weight of your baggage. If youre just going for a few days or even up to a week, a carry-on bag will be sufficient, especially if you know how to pack a carry-on bag. Check out my article for tips on how to pack a carry-on bag for a whole trip: Packing light when moneys tight: How to pack a carry-on. Its a great coincidence that large hand bags are in style right now since you are allowed a carry-on bag and one personal item such as a purse, diaper bag, briefcase or laptop computer. Thats plenty of room to pack anything you need!Tips on how to saveon airfare can be found by clicking here.
Visiting exotic, faraway destinations are not always necessary to have a great vacation. There are plenty of local places, whether it is neighboring states or even in your own city or state, that have great places to see and great things to do. Be open minded! See my articles for local vacation ideas if you live in the Charleston area. These are great examples of close to home locations that make great budget friendly vacation spots:
