Love that "Dirty Water", save the planet, and get a free t-shirt

Today is Earth Day and, try as I might, I just cant seem to avoid writing a little blurb about our beloved Charles (chaa-aaa-hhhlss) River and the fun (free!) efforts our city is taking to give it a little face-lift this upcoming Saturday, April 25. (http://www.crwa.org/cleanup.html)

The Charles River has come a long way. Although it was around long before the Mayflower was even being whittled or the Native Americans were getting their hunt-on, the face and shape of the banks of the Charles have undergone quite the transformation in the past few hundred years.

Ironically enough, the building blocks for our river banks (which may have helped coin the term of endearment Dirty Water) are composed primarily of giant mounds of garbage. This material was used to fill in the marshlands to create the modern day landscape that you and I cruise down on Storrow Drive. Not a bad deal, unless youre one of the sad souls who has actually submerged a limb into the contents of the worlds wettest garbage dump without realizing this tidbit. But I digress.

The river gets a bad rep, mostly because a lousy garage rock group from LA, called The Standells, wrote a hit single about how appalling the pollution in our river was. If youve ever been to a Sox game or have turned on a radio, you know what Im talking about: I looveee thhaaat Dirty Water ohhh Boston youre my home. Although I dont know why they channeled all their anger our wayLAs pretty dirty too they definitely put us on the maps, and possibly even helped our city address one of the nastiest urban cesspools in America.

It turns out, you see, that about 30 years later, in 1995 the EPA created a campaign to make the river swimmable by 2005. Although it didnt entirely pass the test in 05the river seems to be at least livable for ducks, swamp monsters, Canadian geese and the likes these days. Today, it is serene, perhaps swimmable, and one of the most beautiful bike rides you can find in Boston.

Why, do I tell you this? Because it could be cleaner and this weekend people are lining up along all 80 miles of this snaking body of water to help clean it up.
