Major tourist areas. In-hotel restaurants with cursive neon messages in the windows facing the street. A frightening sign announcing "Fine Dining 5pm-10pm", suggesting "expensive". "The key to budget travel is to approach in front. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the actuality of expense and budgeting is generally in the back of our heads. Planning and consuming our travel budget properly is a concern for most families. Reducing consuming and costs, while still taking pleasure in your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievement and fiscal obligation. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking behind saving money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal funds is incredibly small, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also keeping in mind that while traveling, whether on a finances or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel expenses!..". A name that confuses - Gandhi? Combined with a palace? Wasn't Gandhi sort of "anti-palace"?

Thank goodness I'm a decent restaurant psychic, maybe even a "cuisine whisperer", because otherwise I would never have run up the rain-soaked steps to Gandhi Palace with a hapless companion in tow, lured by a tourist-board magazine coupon promising 15% off unmentioned prices.

The Gandhi Palace occupies the lower portion of the Ramada Plaza Inn on South Katella Avenue in Anaheim, a short walk from the Anaheim Convention Center and near the intersection of Harbor Boulevard, which leads to the main entrance of Disneyland, though that is still fairly far away. With a nearly century-strong storm predicted, and limited parking at our motel down the street, we didn't want to go far or give up our convenient parking space. So on a chilly spring night, we decided to check out the local Indian food.

I wondered what I was getting us into. Beside the door was a large plaster statue of a stereotypical Mexican bandit, holding out a traywith flyers and business cards. On the tables were bright sprays of artificial orchids and lotuses, stuck into vases depicting the rare Indian panda - so rare, it doesn't exist. Clearly, this was a restaurant that believed in reincarnation, and in keeping a few mementoes left over from past lives. My companion and I looked at each other doubtfully, and delayed the host for a moment to look at the menu. Despite the "Fine Dining" a-frame sign outside, the prices, even for my favorite lamb dishes, were reasonable - almost suspiciously so, starting at about $11.99 for vindaloo and curry and jumping to just $16.99 for tandoori lamb chops. Even before the discount coupon, this looked like a good value. The dining area was pleasant, with white table clothes and lighting that was a little too bright. The Indian staff, all male, were dressed in crisp white shirts and dark pants, and looked pleased to see us. But beyond any of this, it smelled delicious and at least two of the tables were occupied by Indian families.

We sat down, presented our coupon, and ordered the lamb chops and a "medium" spicy curry-like Hundi lamb with some garlic naan bread, skipping appetizers as we were not that hungry. About fifteen minutes later, we were presented with a sizzling platter of lamb chops and a copper and brass bowl filled with my curry, accompanied by freshly-made naan bread. The "lamb chops" were a segmented rack of young lamb on a bed of onions and bell peppers, with a natural sauce that was ever so slightly sweet. My dish, while delicious, was slightly hotter than I anticipated and I was very glad to have kept it at "medium", picking out some of the peppers which drove up the heat. We shared both dishes and while both were very good and an excellent value, the lamb chops were especially good. They also offered vegetarian dishes and full multi-course dinners for two in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian forms. But the Gandhi Palace had other offerings in store for us.

As we left, we noticed that the restaurant offered a "Breakfast Buffet" for $7.99, a huge savings off of our other option, an International House of Pancakes nearby where basic breakfasts ran about $11.99, excluding juice or coffee. The following morning we decided to return to the Palace and check out the buffet, which included juice and coffee. While the only eggs offered were scrambled, they were perfectly cooked in small batches which were constantly replenished, accompanied by hash browns, sausages, bacon, pancakes, oatmeal, fresh fruits and toastable bread. Beverages included coffee, orange juice, cranberry juice and apple juice. It was an excellent value and an enjoyable experience, and definitely a way to get a bit more mileage out of a stretched Disneyland or convention budget.
