Two-for-one bacon martinis

Theres no shortage of flavored vodkas on the market these days, with bars offering up everything from the rather prosaic lemon-infused ones to the more unusual such as watermelon, black cherry and even root beer. The essential to budget travel is to prepare in advance. When it comes to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the reality of cost and budgeting is often in the back of our heads. Organizing and spending our travel budget carefully is a concern for most families. Curbing spending and fees, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed achievements and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning regarding saving money while travelling is simple: Even if your personal budget is highly tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, whether on a price range or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel expenses!. But you cant say youve truly lived until youve tried a bacon martini.

Thats right: bacon-infused vodka. And to my knowledge, theres only one place on the planet you can find it, and for that matter, only one place on the planet thats twisted enough to create it in the first place.

That would be the Double Down Saloon, located near the Hard Rock Hotel in what locals quaintly called the Fruit Loop for its gay and lesbian bars and clubs. The Double Down is a long-standing punk bar, dark and smoky with graffiti from all the bands that have toured through.

The basis for the bacon martini is simple enough: a few rinds of raw bacon are dropped into a large vat of vodka and left to sit until its been deemed long enough to have allowed the hard, clear liquid to take on the greasy flavor.

Being a long fan of martinis, I knew I had to try it. Upon ordering it, a young girl with a bleached-white Mohawk turned to me and said that she was a vegetarian. Of course you are, I replied and girded my loins for what was to come.

Once the cocktail is delivered to you, two senses are immediately assaulted. First is the smell. It smells like bacon, which can be more than a little disconcerting given that the aroma is coming from a cloudy martini glass. Second is the look. Yes, the vodka is cloudy but even more disturbing is the visible slick of oil on top.

I took a sip.

There was a huge disconnect in my brain as it processed the taste of bacon in a liquid. The grease I normally love at breakfast sat like lead on my tongue. I think my eyes may have even watered.

I managed one more sip before I gave up.

Now, you, too, can have the same wonderful experience, and at a bargain price. On June 19, National Martini Day, the Double Down will be offering its bacon martinis in a two-for-one deal. Prove yourself more of a man than me (granted, an easy task) and have two, or bring along a friend for the fun in watching his or her expression.
