Major 7.0+ earthquake strikes Haiti; tsunami warning cancelled

A major earthquake registering approximately 7.0 - 7.3 depending on initial reports has struck the island of Haiti, prompting a tsunami warning in the Caribbean. The warning has just been cancelled. according to the National Weather Service Tsunami Warning website.

Relatives of passengers on cruise ships operating in the area have contacted cruise lines, but no ships appear to have been affected by the earthquake. In the event of a tsunami at sea, the wave generally passes virtually unnoticed under most ships, only unleashing its destructive power once it reaches land.

A Princess Cruises representative stated to a concernedcaller from this office that they had heard of no problems in the area affecting their cruise ships or passengers.
