This Saturday, September 15, 2012, marks the annual San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival at San Francisco Bay's historic Treasure Island. For a unique travel experience, you can't beat this colorful local tradition featuring teams of local Chinese-americans who excel at this traditional Asian cultural activity.
Beginning with a traditional Buddhist monk ceremony on Saturday, over 120 dragon boat teams and 3,500 dragon boat paddlers are racing a challenging 500 meter course. Dragon boat teams range from novice to competitive skill level. Novice teams represent local Bay Area corporations, public agencies, and non-profit community. These recreational and competitive teams practice year-round and hail from all over the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands.
This is an impressive ancient sport where you can also enjoy a day on the Bay with free activities including traditional music and dance performances, a variety of international food booths, plus interesting arts activities. Children will love the Dragon Land childrens activity pavilion where they can ride a train, race an inflatable obstacle course, scale a climbing wall, get faces painted, or be entertained by a magician. There's traditional Tai Chi, Taiko Drumming, and other Chinese culture events for all ages.
Shuttles will run from central San Francisco (outside the SF Marriott Marquis at the Powell Street BART / MUNI Station) and from San Francisco's famous Chinatown (Kearny Street near Sacramento Street).
