Whether you're headed for Graceland, the Memphis Zoo, or any of Memphis's other popular venues, there are two things you can't leave town without experiencing: live blues music and Memphis style barbecue. Here's just a bit of info to whet your appetite.

MEMPHIS ON TV

Memphis has been featured in a lot of films, including the movie version of John Grisham's bestseller "The Firm," now a hit NBC series starring Josh Lucas.

Many people fell in love with Memphis watching episodes of Memphis Beat, a TNT production that starred Jason Lee and aired 2010-2011.

GETTING AROUND

A personal vehicle is a great way to see the city, but you might also want to try the Memphis Hop, a hop on, hop off bus ride with "HopStops" throughout downtown Memphis. If you'd rather stay seated, it takes 2 hours to ride the full loop - a good way to see sights in air-conditioned comfort.

Adult tickets are $20; $15 for ages 12-17; and under 12 is free. Purchase online at www.MemphisHop.com. Riders also receive a coupon book with up to $70 in savings at local attractions.

Make time to ride one of Memphis's famous trolleys. These vintage cars are beautifully restored and make stops at plenty of well-known spots. The Memphis trolley takes you by Beale Street, South Main Arts District, the Mississippi River, and more. The 2.5 mile Riverfront Loop stretches along the Mississippi River; and the Madison Avenue trolley gives you access to Midtown Memphis.

Trolley drivers accept cash only, with fares starting at $1. A day pass is only $3.50.

BEALE STREET

No trip to Memphis is complete without a stroll down Beale Street. One of America's most famous streets, this is the place where W. C. Handy penned the first blues song. (The W. C. Handy Music Festival takes place July 19-28 in Florence, AL, birthplace of Handy.) Stroll down Beale Street to W.C. "The important to budget travel is to approach onward. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the fact of expense and budgeting is always in the back of our heads. Considering and spending our travel budget properly is a consideration for most families. Reducing spending and prices, while still experiencing your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured success and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thinking regarding economizing money while touring is simple: Even if your personal funds is really tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also recalling that while traveling, regardless of whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel expenses!..". Handy Park, a frequent locale for free concerts and traveling musicians.

Beale Street is packed with music venues, eateries, parks, museums, and shopping. Between 2nd and 3rd, musical notes embedded in the concrete mark the Walk of Fame, where some of Memphis' finest musicians are honored.

One stop has to be A. Schwab's Dry Goods Store. This shop has been around since 1876 and features three floors filled with everything from fun to freaky. Schwab's also carries the city's largest selection of hats.

Beale Street got its start as a home for traders and merchants who wanted to move their goods up and down the Mississippi River. The proximity to the river meant a growing influx of traveling musicians. Then in the early 1900s W. C. Handy introduced the song "Blues on Beale Street" and a host of blues and jazz artists followed him to Beale Street: Louis Armstrong, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and countless others. Thus the music known as Memphis Blues was born.

In 1966, Beale Street was designated a National Historic Landmark. Eleven years later, an act of Congress officially recognized Beale Street as the Home of the Blues.

WHERE TO EAT

No trip to Memphis would be complete without tasting their spectacular barbecue. Just a few of the places worth visiting:

(1) Alfred's on Beale Street is a recent winner of the cherished "Memphis in May" World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. Menu items include their award-winning baby back ribs, lots more barbecue dishes, plus catfish, steak, and salmon. Live entertainment nightly.

(2) 10 Bones Barbecue in Hernando, MS has won 60 grand championships and 200 first place prizes. Gotta try their fried ribs.

(3) A local favorite is Corky's in East Memphis. Pork shoulders spend 22 hours cooking to perfection over hickory chips and charcoal; ribs: a seven-hour labor of lusciousness. Top off your meal with their famous onion loaf or a slice of fudge pie. Best buy is the $6.99 daily lunch special from 10:45am to 4pm.

WHERE TO STAY

If you're a fan of B&Bs, the Memphis area has several to choose from: (1) Just south of Memphis is the posh Bonne Terre Country Inn & Cafe in Nesbit, MS.

(2) The New York Times once proclaimed the Talbot Heirs Guesthouse in downtown Memphis "one of the city's best kept secrets"; rates range from $130-$275 nightly.

(3) Magnolia Grove B&B in Hernando, MS offers rates as low as $80 a night, including a hearty breakfast. Stays of three or more nights (or two or more when booking more than one room) receive a 20% discount.
