Ever wonder what it was like back in the day when people went to the pictures as if it was an entire experience, rather than popping into the mega-plexes filled with screaming kids and spilled, over-priced popcorn scattering the floors?
The independently owned Alamo Drafthouse is one of those experiences to tell the grandkids. Patrons are asked to arrive forty minutes before show time to look over the menu and place an order from their seats. Only a handful of movies showing at a time, but include everything from block-buster hits to kid friendly films. Upon arrival, its as if time has stopped once you enter the doors. Inside the theater, true to Hollywood form, red chairs and curtains glow before the lights completely dim.
Leading up to the show, guests can enjoy pre-theater entertainment as they munch in their seatsand believe me, youll want to munch on more than just popcorn. The menu offers a wide array of dishes everything from gourmet Sesame Seed Seared Tuna Salad and Roasted Turkey sandwiches on havarti with rosemary aioli, for those with more refined tastes. Fish tacos, bacon cheese burgers, potato skins, and mac-n-cheese for the college students in the crowd, beer chili, chips and queso, and green chili queso fries to keep the locals happy, and of course popcorn with real melted butter for the classic movie lovers out there.
The renowned chef also caters to the box office as well. Angels and Devil Food Cake for the new Angels and Demons drama, and Plomeek Soup made with rich carrot-parsnip and Multi-Seeded Vulcan bread for all the Trekkies in the audience.
True to its name, the Drafthouse does not disappoint with its drink selections either. The wine collection is expansive, more than just Zinfandels and Cabernets on the list, and the ales, beers, and liquors would out-do even the greatest frat parties around the University of Texas campus.
The theater is more than just movies and good eats though. Signature events include cameos from acclaimed films from the past including Apocolypto, Boogie Nights, Office Space, and Clerks. Adding a time warp in the mix, there are several screenings throughout the year of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Foleyvision boasts live sound effects, music, and dubbing right in front of the audience. Quote-along nights allow devotees to scream along to some of their favorite classics and require dancing during some of the best songs from the movies soundtrack.
And for family friendly nights, the Drafthouse shows childrens classics such as Bedknobs and Broomsticks, or the Explorers. If youre looking for more than a stadium sized theater and long concession lines, then come to one of the five Alamo Drafhouse locations around Austin for a unique experience and a good time from start to finish.
