Amidst the dense foliage blanketing the Italian coast, a well-worn hiking trail snakes its way up and down the rugged sea cliffs, rewarding the sweaty traveler with frequent breathtaking views. This is Cinque Terre, a collective name for the five small villages that speckle the rugged coastline of the Italian Riviera. The five villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore are reminiscent of a much earlier and simpler time in Italian culture.

A popular tourist destination, much of the appeal of Cinque Terre lies on its lack of modern urban development. The five villages are primarily connected by rail, hiking trails and boatsyou wont find too many cars in this part of Italy. Cinque Terre is a wonderful destination to pair with polar opposites like Rome and Florencebig cities that hold a very different type of appeal.

Given the nature of the villages, some locals offer bed and breakfast lodgings for tourists in their own apartments. However, in the peak summer season, travelers may be better off seeking more traditional accommodations in larger towns located a little further away (often only a few minutes by rail).

Any visitor to Cinque Terra should plan on hiking the trail from Monterosso to Riomaggiore. The difficulty of the hike ranges from an easy flat walk to a gut-grinding climb up long stretches of rock stairs. Plan on bringing a good pair of hiking boots and allowing at least half a day to complete the hike. Most travelers hike one way from Monterosso to Riomaggiore and then take the train back. Any way you do it, you will not regret the rugged beauty of the rainforest atmosphere and picturesque coastline that borders the trail. Note that a hiking pass must be purchased in order to navigate the numerous check points that dot the trail. The cost is only five euros and can be obtained any number of places including local train stations.

Although hiking is probably the main draw of Cinque Terre, this unique destination has much more to offer. While these tiny little towns may seem more appealing to older generations, Cinque Terre also presents the student traveler their fair share of nightlife and entertainment. The important to budget travel is to prepare ahead. When it comes along to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved trips and/or going to see new places we have never been before, the actuality of expense and budgeting is often in the back of our mind. Considering and spending our travel budget carefully is a main concern for most families. Reducing spending and prices, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to assured achievements and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The thought behind economizing money while traveling is simple: Even if your personal budget is extremely tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also thinking about that while traveling, regardless of whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a huge vacation or travel costs!.

Take Monterosso for example. While it may be a quiet, modest town during the typical weekday, pick any Friday or Saturday in the summer months and you are sure to find a melting pot of foreign travelers celebrating the night in any number of local bars.

Summer is hot on the Italian coast, and spending a few hours unwinding at a local bar is a great way to end a day of hiking. If youre looking for a quick bit, dont hesitate to try a local pizzeria which is generally fairly affordable, not to mention mouth-wateringly delicious.

Whether youre looking for a natural escape in one of Italys most scenic venues or simply a few nights to experience a refreshingly unique nightlife, then make sure to add Cinque Terre to your list.
