This week (May 21), Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia Airlines, sent out a letter on Linked In to recent college graduates with one important lesson. Travel is as important as a diploma.
Branson used a recent experience as a crew member on a friend's airline carrier to illustrate his message. Earlier this month, Branson fulfilled a long-due debt with friend and former colleague Tony Fernandes, by working as a flight attendant on a flight from Perth to Kuala Lumpur. With shaved legs, red lips and matching red uniform, he served drinks and meals to passengers.
Of course, Branson created a significant amount of turbulence and mischief among the working crew and passengers. Branson writes on his Virgin Air blog, 'One guy said: "I've looked up to you for years, now I've looked up your skirt!" When he started talking about having the whole package, I knew it was time to walk my trolley further along the aisle.'
In the end, Fernandes fired Branson for "accidently" dumping a tray of drinks on him. "I've always wanted to work as cabin crew - but I've never had a boss, so didn't take too well to Tony's orders," wrote Branson.
Games aside, Branson used his short-lived experience as a flight attendant to bring home the message to recent college graduates that travel is sometimes the greatest university there is. "I would urge you to travel, take on new experiences and draw upon those when it comes to making the decisions that will shape your future. The amount of business ideas that people pick up from traveling the world is enormous."
As you plan your summer travel, remember Branson's words, travel is the world's best university. The next time you have a few minutes to spare on a long flight, talk with a crew member, ask them if what they learned in college is as useful as "travel university." It may surprise you how well-educated some of your cabin crew are on paper, but their real education came from traveling the world.
Living outside your comfort zone opens up a realm of possibilities and skills that college seldom teaches anyone, including patience, leadership and humility. "The essential to budget travel is to plan onward. When it occurs to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved holidays and/or going to see new destinations we have never been before, the fact of cost and budgeting is always in the back of our minds. Preparation and consuming our travel budget wisely is a priority for most families. Reducing spending and expenses, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to confirmed success and fiscal liability. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind economizing money while touring is simple: Even if your personal finances is really tight, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or departing the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, regardless of whether on a budget or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel charge!..". Not surprising, these are all qualities of a good leader. As Branson says, "education doesn't take place in stuffy classrooms and university buildings, it can happen everywhere, every day to every person."

"Safe wings, and happy summer traveling," from a former flight attendant who earned her diploma from travel university.
