When associated with motorcycles, a poker run is an event where motorcyclists will ride to predestined stops and draw a playing card. At the end of the poker run the person with the best poker hand will win.
How the poker runs are administered are as individual as the organizations running them. The basics, however, usually follow the same format.
The motorcycle club or charitable organization will publicize an upcoming poker run to benefit someone or some cause. The poker run committee will go out to solicit donations from the local business community and establish poker run stops.
On the day of the event, bikers will gather at the first stop to register and get the materials for the poker run itself. Usually the first card for the day is drawn at this first stop with the result of the draw being recorded on a ballot or poker hand. "The important to budget travel is to plan onward. Poker runs can then either be self-guided where the instructions and directions for the rest of the stops are handed out to all the participants or the poker runs will be led by Road Captains taking groups of riders through the poker run course.
At each stop on the poker run, the participants draw another card until, typically, five cards are recorded for the poker hand. At the last stop, the poker hands are turned in to the judges and the best poker hand is determined.

What should the motorcyclist be aware of before participating in a poker run?
- What is the cost to participate?
- Does the cost include a tee shirt or some other event souvenir?
- Does the cost include a meal?
- What is the cost for a passenger and does his or her fee include meals or souvenirs?
- Where are the poker draw stops? If all stops are taverns and you have a problem with that, reconsider participating.
- Are you comfortable riding with strangers? If not, consider a self-guided poker run.
- Are there special requirements for participating? For instance, a poker run to benefit the Brain Injury Association may require all participants to wear a helmet or brain bucket.
- Is the charity worthy of your donations?
What are the considerations for the poker run organizers?
- Is there a contingency plan in the event of severe weather? Does the plan include either indoor facilities for especially the final stop or perhaps a rain date if all activities must take place outdoors?
- Does your local or state government have permit requirements for poker runs or other charitable activities?
- Does your organization have liability insurance?
- Is there enough business support in the community?
- Do you have enough volunteers to pull off a big event? Remember, you will need sales people to contact businesses, public relation types to get the word out, workers to man the registration and the poker draw stops, and Road Captains to plan the routes and lead the bikers.
Motorcyclists love a good ride and they love giving to others. The combination of both of those elements comes together in a poker run.
