Vancouver has again (for the third straight year) been voted the most liveable city in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit. 140 cities were given scores 0 to 100 on 30 factors across five areas: infrastructure, culture and environment, education, health care and stability. Vancouver scored 98 out of 100, the same score it received for the two previous years. While some question the validity of these types of rankings (see the cities that beat San Francisco below), there is no denying that Vancouver, a city of green glass towers set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains and blue waters, is one of North America's most beautiful cities. If you're planning on visiting the city this year to see what all the hype is about, here are some tips and suggestions:
Getting there and where to stay: WestJet, United, Continental and Air Canada fly direct from San Francisco to Vancouver. Another option is to fly Virgin America to Seattle and then rent a car to cross the border.
To really mingle with locals while saving some money, book a room at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Located at the western tip of Vancouver, the university is surrounded by green forests and the ocean but still only 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver by bus. Available accommodations include no-frills private rooms in shared apartments (kitchen and bathroom shared between the other three or five bedrooms), dorm rooms (bathroom down the hall) and spiffy suites with contemporary furnishings.
Things to do: Gastown, Robson Street, Stanley Park, Granville Island and the Capilano Suspension Bridge are some of Vancouver's premier attractions. For lesser-known options, the Museum of Anthropology (part of UBC) houses one of the world's best collections of Northwest Indigenous art and artifacts. Vancouver is a relatively young city and it is perhaps due to its late development that it has been better able to recognize the existence and contributions of its indigenous population. The Dr. Sun Yat Sen garden transports visitors back to 15th-century China while the Chinatown Night Market sells as many boba drinks and cheap T-shirts as you can carry. Victoria Island and Whistler are easy day trips. Check out all that Vancouver has to offer at their tourism site.
What and where to eat: Vancouver is known for its seafood (smoked salmon and oysters galore), maple syrup and ice wine, all of which are sold in the tourist shops. As Vancouverites have embraced Japanese cuisine with open arms, there's an abundance of ramen restaurants, izakayas (pub-style bars serving Japanese tapas) and sushi houses. "The essential to budget travel is to approach in front. When it happens to family trips, globetrotting, well-deserved vacations and/or going to see new locations we have never been before, the fact of cost and budgeting is generally in the back of our mind. Arranging and consuming our travel budget correctly is a main concern for most families. Lowering expending and expenses, while still delighting your vacation to its fullest, is the key to certain success and fiscal responsibility. Your pocketbook and family will thank you! The reasoning behind protecting money while vacationing is simple: Even if your personal finances is really limited, you can still take a break and enjoy life! Simply put, life is just too short to never step out of the door or leaving the homestead! Also remembering that while traveling, whether on a resources or not, even the smallest of things can all add op to a large vacation or travel expenses!..". Try Benkei Noodle Shop, Guu and Kadoya Japanese Restaurant. After dinner, grab some dessert at True Confections, Vancouver's only licensed dessert restaurant.
For those wondering how U.S. cities fared, the highest ranking U.S. city was Pittsburgh at number 29. San Francisco, beat by cities such as Detroit and Minneapolis, didn't even crack the top 10 list for U.S. cities.
